On Pakistan Day, a noted banker and philanthropist Sultan Ali Allana was awarded the highly respected Nishan-e-Khidmat at a special investiture ceremony in Aiwan-e-Sadr. President Asif Ali Zardari awarded the honour to Sultana Ali Allana’s outstanding public services in Pakistan’s financial and social fields.
The honour was first approved on Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day celebration on 14th August 2024 in recognition of Allana’s visionary leadership and enduring contribution to the country’s development.

Sultan Ali Allanaโs 40-year career is a testament to his relentless dedication to transforming Pakistanโs financial landscape. As a pioneer in microfinance banking, he founded the First Microfinance Bank in 2002, championing financial inclusion and providing support to underserved communities.
His initiatives have also contributed significantly to the harmonisation of Pakistan’s financial system with global standards, paving the way for the country’s delisting from the FATF grey list. He also initiated Pakistan’s first agriculture programme under a commercial bank, empowering small farmers with sustainable models that have solidified rural economies.

Recognition among Financial Experts and Leaders
Key figures have praised Allana’s success, recognising his role in stabilising Pakistan economically. Former finance secretary Dr Waqar Masood has complemented his efforts to get Pakistan out of the FATF grey list, while former finance minister Miftah Ismail recognised his efforts in leading the country out of financial constraints.
Economist Dr. Ashfaq Hussain called the award a deserving recognition of Allana’s pioneering contributions to banking, social uplift, education and healthcare. Pakistan Banking Association Chairman Zafar Masud highlighted how Allana’s vision has transformed the country’s banking sector and promoted foreign investments, bringing Pakistan to par with global financial standards.
