International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March around the world to applaud women for their efforts. Zindagi Trust is approaching this international women’s day with the most important campaign. #ThinkBeforeYouJoke sheds light on how sometimes humor is not harmless. Here’s how:

What’s The Campaign About?

The campaign is about how a lot of times jokes are used to marginalize women. These jokes about beautiful women not being able to study hard are incredibly discriminatory. In addition to that, the biggest joke of all “oh she’s a beauty with brains” is incredibly problematic.

Why can’t women be both without that being an achievement? The ad shows young school-going girls in their uniforms as they sit and read out these jokes and respond to them.

What Are Some Jokes That Should Be Cancelled?

One joke that they tackle is “beautiful girls don’t put in a lot of effort in studying because they know some fool in some corner of the world would be studying to become an engineer or doctor for them.” Not even sure whether this joke is funny in any sense but we’ll grant it that label to appease the haters!

The girls have the most absurd faces in reaction to this joke. They come up with the strongest arguments to shut down this thinking! For instance, women are also studying to become doctors and engineers. One asks, “does this mean I am not beautiful then?”

What Do These Jokes Do?

Jokes are a tricky zone. If we start letting things slide in the name of jokes, we would be playing a passive role in normalizing such problematic concepts. You laugh at something once, twice, and then it’s fair game. When such jokes become the norm, we not only start marginalizing women more but also perpetuate stereotypes.
