The 55-year-old actor returns to the role of Ethan Hunt, who must race against time after a mission goes wrong. Tom Cruise is joined on the cast by Henry Cavill (“Superman”), Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin. Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Wes Bentley and Frederick Schmidt also star.
Based on the TV show of the same name, the “Mission: Impossible” movies are one of Hollywood’s most lucrative franchises. The first film, released in 1996, grossed more than $456M worldwide. The 2011 movie, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” is the franchise’s biggest hit to date, grossing $692M worldwide. The most recent release, 2015’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” follows in second place with over $682M at the global box office. In total, the franchise has grossed $2.7 billion since it launched in 1996.
