United States President Donald Trump signed his first piece of legislation, the Laken Riley Act, which allows for the pre-trial detention of illegal migrants charged with theft, burglary, or shoplifting. The bill which garnered bipartisan support in both House and Senate, was signed on Wednesday.
Trump stated that the new law mandates the Department of Homeland Security to detain individuals arrested for serious crimes such as theft, assault, or murder.

The law allows state governments to sue the federal government for immediate action if a future administration fails to enforce immigration laws, a situation Trump claimed occurred previously. Named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student killed by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, the act marks a significant step in Trump’s border security efforts.
