In the unpredictable world of Pakistani cricket, drama isn’t confined to the pitch — it often spills over into real life. The latest chapter in this ongoing saga? The candid remarks of Umar Akmal about former wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider.
Appearing on a local TV show, Umar dropped a few emotional — and pointed — truths. And while he didn’t go for the jugular, his words painted a clear picture: he feels betrayed.

Putting the Past Aside — And Reaching Out Anyway
You might remember Zulqarnain Haider as the player who vanished mid-series in 2010, citing life threats and fleeing to London. His career never quite recovered after that moment, and his story became a cautionary tale for cricketers under pressure.
But fast forward to 2022. Zulqarnain was battling a life-threatening illness, and guess who showed up?
“As a cricketer and a junior, I was the first to meet him when he was in need,” Umar revealed. And he didn’t go alone — “My wife was the first among those who motivated me to take that initiative.”
Despite their troubled past, Umar Akmal put old accusations aside — including Zulqarnain’s claims that Umar tried to end his career — and offered not just emotional support, but financial help too.
That’s no small gesture in any walk of life. But especially rare in a world where public feuds and old grudges often take center stage.
Disappointed, But Still Taking the High Road
So what’s changed now? According to Umar — not much, unfortunately. “Recently, when he recovered, he once again has started doing the same things,” Umar said, clearly hinting that Zulqarnain may have gone back to old patterns of behaviour.
Still, there was no sign of bitterness in Umar’s tone. Just measured disappointment.
“I have no resentment. If I wanted, I could have sent him a legal notice. But I didn’t, knowing his financial condition,” he stated.
When Loyalty Feels One-Sided
Umar’s comments raise a bigger question that many in sports — and life — can relate to: What do you do when you go out of your way to help someone, only to feel like your kindness was taken for granted?
He didn’t name names beyond Zulqarnain. He didn’t throw shade unnecessarily. But his words felt personal — and that honesty gave his story weight.
Even after everything, Umar ended his thoughts on a surprisingly optimistic note:
“I will still take it positively.”
