uTorrent is one of the most popular platforms to download media, from games to favorite series, software files and more.
However, while Pakistanis are active in using such platforms, what risk they might hold for an individual is still unknown.
Google Project Zero researcher Tavis Ormand recently gave shocking insights about how platforms like uTorrent and BitTorrent are vulnerable to hacks, causing unknown scammers to get access to an individual’s personal information due to security flaws.
A similar security flaw is present in Window’s version of the software. The issue is giving hackers access to collect an individual’s personal data. These hackers can resolve web domains while you’re downloading something, in a manner that gives them access to your PC’s internal storage.
These hackers can resolve web domains while you’re downloading something, in a manner that gives them access to your PC’s internal storage, quotes ProPakistani, if you are using an unpatched version of BitTorrent or uTorrent (which includes uTorrent web), your systems’ security is endangered.
How to Avoid Torrent Hackers
Thankfully, there is a way to get rid of the hackers. Ormandy added that the latest release of uTorrent’s beta has files which fix the flaw. Though he was not too sure whether all the precautions and necessary measurements have been taken to tackle this issue permanently.
“Our fix is complete and is available in the most recent beta release (build 3.5.3.44352 released on 16 Feb 2018). This week, we will begin to deliver it to our installed base of users. All users will be updated with the fix automatically over the following days. The nature of the exploit is such that an attacker could craft a URL that would cause actions to trigger in the client without the user’s consent (e.g. adding a torrent).” – BitTorrent engineering VP, Dave Rees
The solution to this problem is that you should not use the Web and Desktop versions of uTorrent until the developers and team have ensured security measure have been taken into consideration and applied!
