Crash Details and Immediate Response

The aircraft encountered bad weather and was forced to divert course to Aktau. Kanat Bozumbaev, Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister, reported that the aircraft attempted an emergency landing about three kilometres away from Aktau Airport.

Although authorities have not determined the cause yet, preliminary reports indicate multiple reasons. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that the bad weather conditions made the aircraft change its course. The Russian civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, did not rule out a bird strike as the cause of the onboard emergency.
