Violence Erupts at JPMC ICU After Patient’s Death

Tension rose inside the ICU of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) when a fight broke out between doctors and attendants after the death of a critical patient.

The attendants allegedly attacked the doctors after the patient, 17-year-old Nisar Ali, passed away. CCTV footage shows the attendants assaulting the medical staff.

The attendants blamed the hospital for not giving Nisar proper treatment. According to his family, Nisar was suffering from a respiratory illness. The hospital administration, however, said he had a severe sepsis infection and was already in critical condition. They added that he was being treated properly.

After his death, Nisar’s family staged a protest with the body outside the Saddar police station. They said doctors had suggested moving him to the ICU. However, even though two ICU beds were vacant, they were told he couldn’t be admitted. This led to a heated argument between the family and the doctors.

Dr Shiva Ram, one of the doctors who was reportedly assaulted, along with other staff, went to the Saddar police station for their safety. Dr Shiva said the ICU has nine beds, seven were occupied and two were reserved for gynecology patients. He told the attendants about the situation and advised them to shift the patient elsewhere. He said the attendants then attacked him.

Dr Shiva also said the lack of beds is due to poor hospital management, not the doctors. He shared that in the surgical ward, only seven out of 30 beds were being used.

Meanwhile, the Young Doctors Association (YDA) strongly condemned the attack. They announced a boycott of the outpatient department (OPD) at JPMC on Friday (today). The YDA claimed that 10 to 15 individuals assaulted Dr Shiva in the ICU. They demanded immediate registration of an FIR and quick arrest of everyone involved in the attack.
