Water Tanker Kills Man and Pregnant Wife

A man and his pregnant wife were killed in an accident when a water tanker hit a bike in Karachi, on the main Shahra-e-Faisal road on Monday, according to police and hospital officials.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Pir Mohammed Shah of the Karachi Traffic Police said that the water truck was travelling from Model Colony to Shahra-e-Faisal without making a left turn. According to him, there were freshly placed concrete barriers on the spit, but the driver broke through them when the car’s brakes failed and struck the family on a bike.

“As a result of the water tanker accident, the couple and their newborn baby were killed,” the Traffic DIG said. He also added that the traffic police officials present at the scene caught the errant driver and seized the tanker, handing it over to the police for investigation.

Following the unfortunate tragedy, the full-term pregnant mother gave birth to a baby, however the infant did not survive, according to Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police Mohammed Tariq Nawaz. The accident happened while the husband was allegedly taking his wife to the hospital for a check-up.

The bodies of the couple and their newborn son were delivered to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed informed Dawn.com.

Not the First Water Tanker Accident

This was, however, not the first accident of such nature in the city. According to medical records, there was a startling rise in traffic accidents in Karachi in 2024, with approximately 500 fatalities and 4,879 injuries brought on by a variety of factors, including careless driving and construction.

The city also recently enacted regulations limiting the movement of heavy trucks and tankers, permitting them to only operate from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. However, many drivers don’t seem to follow these regulations resulting in accidents.
