Weekly Inflation Rises by 3.97% YoY: PBS

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a 3.97% year-on-year increase in weekly inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), for the week ending January 2. On a week-on-week basis, however, inflation saw a slight decline of 0.07% for combined consumption groups.

Sugar prices increased for the fifth consecutive week, with a rise of Rs1.31 per kilogram. Meanwhile, the prices of 18 essential items, including chicken (up by Rs42.07/kg), onions (up by Rs6.37/kg), bananas (up by Rs3/dozen) and ghee (up by Rs7.73 for 2.5 kg tin), also surged.

Conversely, prices of 10 commodities dropped, offering some relief. Tomatoes led the decline, falling by Rs34.41/kg, followed by potatoes (down by Rs6.32/kg). Eggs, garlic and wheat flour prices also decreased during the week.
