This delicious wafer-covered chocolate bar is almost always believed to be an American snack here in the US. Well, guess what, it’s an old English snack. KitKat was initially developed by the English Brand Rowntree back in 1935. It instantly became a hit and stayed under Rowntree’s brand name until the company was purchased by Nestle in 1988. Before being sold to Nestle, Rowntree licensed Kit Kat to Hershey.
Now, American Kit-Kats are made by the Hershey Company, while British Kit-Kats are manufactured by Nestlé.
The Composition Of Kitkat
The American-made chocolate bar contains more sugar. While the British-made chocolate bar is higher in fat and cocoa, resulting in a richer, smoother flavour.

According to a taste test done to identify the likeness of British KitKats subjects could determine there was a clear difference and the testers who preferred the American Kit Kat stated they like it because it was familiar to them. Meanwhile, some of the participants commented that the British Kit Kat was less enhanced chocolate and the American Kit Kat was crunchier.
The huge difference in taste is mainly substantial due to UK laws. According to a Business Insider report, U.K. legislation states that to be considered milk chocolate, a product must be at least 25% cocoa solids. However, in the U.S., a product must merely be 10% chocolate liquor.
What Do You Prefer?
It’s hard to get your hands on the British version in the UK – according to a deal made by Hershey which was made to ban imports of British Kit-Kats. A fan started a petition to protest the Hershey Company’s legal action in 2015 and as of 2018, it received three nearly 40,000 signatures.
The internet also agrees with the superior taste of British KitKats. While there is no way one would simply reject a chocolate bar – a British KitKat would definitely take a superior spot.
