A women’s football match in Joypurhat, Bangladesh, was cancelled after protests by students from a religious school led to vandalism at the venue.
Samiul Hasan Emon, the tournament organiser, explained that hundreds of protesters, mainly from a local religious school, marched to the venue, creating a situation that forced them to cancel the game. Abu Bakkar Siddique, the headmaster of the school, justified the protest, stating that girls’ football goes against Islamic beliefs and they saw it as their religious duty to stop it.

This is the second incident of its kind in just two days. A similar protest in Dinajpur on Tuesday led to the postponement of another women’s football match just 30 minutes before it was set to begin. That protest turned violent, resulting in four injuries, though all victims were later released from the hospital.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) strongly condemned the disruptions, emphasising that football is a sport for everyone. These incidents highlight the ongoing struggle and growing influence of religious groups over women’s involvement in sports in Bangladesh.
