In a celebration of humans! Extraordinarily wonderful biological diversity that we have in this world, Rumeysa Gelgi, the world’s tallest woman, and Jyoti Amge, the world’s shortest woman, met for afternoon tea at the Savoy Hotel in London to mark Guinness World Records Day. Despite their staggering 5-foot height difference, the two women found common ground and shared heartfelt moments.

A Meeting of Icons

Standing at 215.16 centimetres (7 feet 0.7 inches), Rumeysa Gelgi hails from Turkey. Diagnosed with the rare Weaver syndrome, her unique height has earned her multiple records, including the largest hands and longest back for a woman. Meanwhile, Jyoti Amge, from India, measures just 62.8 centimetres (2 feet 0.7 inches) due to achondroplasia, a genetic condition that affects bone growth. Her small stature hasn’t stopped her from achieving big things, including a role on American Horror Story: Freak Show, making her the shortest actress ever.

Though physically worlds apart, the two record holders connected over shared interests. “We both love makeup, jewellery, and self-care,” Gelgi said, adding that despite the height gap making eye contact difficult, they bonded instantly.

Amge expressed similar joy, calling the encounter “wonderful.”

Celebrating Differences

Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday praised the meeting as a powerful moment of inclusivity. “By bringing together these two amazing women, we celebrate what makes each person unique,” he said. Both Gelgi and Amge have been named GWR ICONS, a new category introduced in the 2025 edition of the record book.

Breaking Barriers Beyond Records

Gelgi, a web designer, has used her platform to raise awareness about Weaver syndrome. She has also featured in the documentary Rumeysa: Walking Tall, chronicling her journey to meet other record holders. Similarly, Amge, a prominent media personality, is a vocal advocate for people with disabilities, often using her global presence to inspire others.

A Symbolic Moment

Their meeting at the Savoy Hotel wasn’t just about records; it symbolised how differences can unite us. Whether it’s Gelgi’s towering stature or Amge’s petite frame, their achievements remind us that limits exist only in the mind.

As both women stood side by side, they exemplified the beauty of diversity, proving that no matter your height, the human spirit knows no bounds.
