South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol spent his first night in jail after his arrest last week. Yoon, who faces insurrection charges related to his controversial declaration of martial law, was detained following a dawn raid. He became the first sitting South Korean head of state to be arrested in such a case. A court approved his formal arrest warrant on Sunday, citing concerns that he could destroy evidence. As a result, authorities transferred him from temporary detention to criminal suspect status, facing an indictment and trial.
Yoon’s cell at Seoul Detention Center measures 12 square meters, typically designed for five or six inmates. He underwent the standard procedures upon arrival, including a mug shot and a physical examination, and cooperated fully with prison officials. His cell is equipped with basic amenities, including a small table, shelf, sink and toilet, along with a television, though viewing time is strictly controlled. He is allowed one hour of exercise daily and a weekly shower. His personal security detail will accompany him whenever he leaves the cell.

The political turmoil surrounding Yoon began in December when he declared martial law, which was quickly overturned by lawmakers. He was impeached shortly after, and the Constitutional Court is now considering whether to uphold the impeachment. Yoon has resisted arrest, claiming the investigation is illegal and vowing to fight it. His supporters have staged violent protests, including a riot at a Seoul court where dozens were arrested and 51 police officers were injured.
Despite the unrest, Yoon declined to attend questioning on Monday. His lawyers said they would consider a “forced summon” if he continued to refuse to cooperate. The ongoing legal battles and political tensions have deeply divided South Korea, as the nation awaits a decision on Yoonโs impeachment and criminal charges.
